很多看似毫不相干的单词能被分类讨论区别，是因为它们在某些方面会让人产生混淆，常见的由发音、拼写或意思等方面，如 bear 和 bare，material 和 materiel 等，还有类似于今天的主角 convenient，proper 和 appropriate，等等。
这三个单词，它们都有“方便的，合适的”的意思，因此有的时候会被混淆，然而它们实际的用法还是有区别的：
一、convenient
英文解释：useful, easy or quick to do; not causing problems
Convenient，指对某人来说很方便的，能省时省力省事的，意为“方便的，合宜的”等，例如：
What time would it be convenient for me to come over?
我什么时候过来合适？
I find it convenient to use QR Code for payment.
我发现使用二维码付款很方便。
二、proper
英文解释：right, appropriate or correct; according to the rules
Proper，指正确恰当的，侧重于符合某种标准或习惯，用于此义时只作定语，意为“合适的，恰当的”等，例如：
Make sure that everything is in its proper place.
务必把每样东西都放在恰当的位置。
I would have done the job myself but I didn't have the proper equipment.
我本来可以自己做的，但我没有合适的设备。
三、appropriate
英文解释：suitable, acceptable or correct for the particular circumstances
Appropriate，指适合某一时间、情况、目的等的，常后接介词 for/to，意为“合适的”，例如：
Now that the problem has been identified, appropriate action can be taken.
现在既已找出问题的症结，即可采取适当行动。
Is this film appropriate for small children?
这部电影适合小孩子看吗？
四、三者的区别
1. 首先从英文解释上，我们可以很好把 convenient 与 proper 和 appropriate 区分开来，convenient 表示方便快捷，而 proper 和 appropriate 带有更多的感情色彩。
2. Proper 指正确恰当的，而 appropriate 指适合某个情况，没有过多地强调正确与否，因此它后面常接 for/to 来引出具体的时间、情况或目的，例如：
That isn't the proper way to say that.
这样说不恰当。
That dress isn't appropriate for a wedding.
那件衣服不适合在婚礼上穿。
第一句中的 proper 指这是不对的，或者它可能太不正式或太俚语化了，而第二句中的 appropriate 指不合适，但没有包含对错的味道，因此相比来说 proper 更具感情色彩。
3. 作此义时，proper 一般只作前置定语，而 convenient 和 appropriate 还可以作表语，例如：
We should have had a proper discussion before voting.
我们本应在表决之前好好讨论一下才是。
It is very convenient to pay by credit card.
用信用卡付款非常方便。
Jeans are not appropriate for a formal party.
